Steelyard is hand weighing scales, that determine the weight without additional weights. Weighing on the steelyards was distinguished by a high probability of an error, which could be up to half a pound (200 grams). For this reason, steelyards were banned for use in shops. The steelyards were common in the peddle trade, which was allowed by the Russian Empire Code of Laws.
