Banknotes


The ruble was a monetary unit in the Russian Empire in the early 20th century. The main coin was a gold coin. Silver and copper coins were auxiliary in payments. Monetary denomination of banknotes was set to 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 100 and 500 rubles.

The banknotes of the highest denomination got curious nicknames. The One-Hundred-ruble banknote with the portrait of Catherine II was popularly called Katen'ka, or Yekaterinka. The five-hundred-ruble banknote with the portrait of Peter I was called Peten'ka.
